Abrantes Mayor attacked with a cane

In the fortnightly meeting, the businessman broke into the Pyramid building, where the council sessions are held, and interrupted the session with a cane in his hand, which he used to attack the president but also a councilman and an employee. The meeting was being broadcast online by the municipality but was immediately interrupted, with only the screams that resulted from this assault being audible.

To the Observer, the deputy commissioner of the PSP, André Neves, confirms the police intervention, which led to the arrest of the 64-year-old man who will be present before the judge today. Even so, when the PSP arrived at the site, Jorge Dias Ferreira was no longer inside the municipal building.

The Public Security Police also confirm the need for medical assistance to the mayor, Manuel Valamatos, and the other injured as a result of this attack.. The newspaper Médio Tejo reports that the mayor was injured in the face and was transferred to the Abrantes Hospital.

In a statement, the municipality “repudiates any act of physical and verbal violence that is practiced against any person,” adding that A complaint was filed against the aggressor, not only for the acts of physical violence, but also “for the successive death threats committed on this and other days.”

The businessman Jorge Dias Ferreira has claimed for several years that the bankruptcy of his construction company is due to the Abrantes City Council and requested compensation of more than six million euros, but last year, the Administrative Court of Leiria acquitted the municipality.

Still in March, Jorge Dias Ferreira had asked to speak at the municipality’s public meeting and exceeded the time allowed. The mayor has called the PSP to calm the excited spirits of the businessman.
