The clinical condition of the mayor of Viseu, Almeida Henriques, worsened in the last hours, after being hospitalized at the beginning of the month, infected by the new coronavirus, the municipality reported today.
“In the last hours there has been an unfavorable evolution, with a worsening of the clinical picture,” Almeida Henriques reported, reported the Câmara de Viseu, in a press release sent to the Lusa agency.
Almeida Henriques is admitted to the intensive care unit of the Hospital de São Teotónio.
“The municipality of Viseu appreciates the numerous messages of encouragement from all over the country, from the most diverse neighborhoods, as well as the solidarity shown by all the people of Viseu,” stressed the autarky, in the same note.
In early March, the municipality had reported that the mayor of Viseu (PSD) had tested positive, but he felt fine, had only “mild symptoms” and was working from home.
However, Almeida Henriques was finally admitted to the São Teotónio Hospital, after the symptoms worsened, as a precaution and to allow an easier follow-up of the evolution.
On March 10, the mayor was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, due to the worsening of respiratory failure caused by covid-19, which led to the need for intubation and mechanical ventilation.
