The National Maritime Authority today warned of a sharp rise in mean sea level on the coast of the continent, which occurred today and may be repeated over the weekend and cause flooding.

In a statement, the Authority says that floods are possible, “particularly in regions exposed to sea turbulence, where water can reach apparently safe areas in a short period of time.”

The phenomenon, observed in the last hours, especially on the Algarve coast, along the seafront of Cascais and Ribeira das Naus, in Lisbon, is “natural and common”, at this time of year, says the National Maritime Authority .

It results, he explains, from the combination of equinocial spring tides (the highest of the year) “with a stacking effect (accumulation) of the oceanic water bodies near the coast due to the action of the wind and the strong agitation of the sea of the southwest”.

It is expected, it is said in the statement, that the effect will be repeated during the weekend, in periods coinciding with the high tide, and that it will dissipate from Monday, with the end of the period of equinocial high tides.

The National Maritime Authority recommends that the population “take a preventive stance” along the coast, on the beaches and in areas exposed to maritime agitation.
