Marcelo speaks with the country on Friday and extends the state of emergency until January

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will make a communication to the country this Friday the 4th, at 8:00 p.m., to renew the state of emergency, but this time with an innovation: the President now wants to prepare the next renewal of the state of emergency in the country lives (from December 21 to January 4), to include the Christmas and New Year period.

The objective is, on the one hand, to leave space for the Government to define as soon as possible the rules and restrictions that the country will have to support during the festivities (and Marcelo had already said that it is “common sense that the Portuguese know about in advance how you can organize that weekend of December 24, 25, 26 and 27 “); on the other hand, when the President anticipates decisions, he has more freedom to announce his new request, which should happen in the middle of the month.

Thus, the decree to renew the state of emergency, which will be ready in conjunction with the Government next Thursday to be approved by Parliament on Friday, will be very similar to the one currently in force. With one difference: the preamble will now point to the next extension, which will include Christmas and New Years.

Although the state of emergency currently in force only ends on December 8, the fact that this date is preceded by a long weekend and a holiday means that its renewal is already ahead of day 4. And the specific measures that will be up to the Government to decide and approve must also be announced later this week, as requested by the President.

For this Thursday, the prime minister has already called another meeting of experts and political leaders, in Infarmed. And over the weekend, the Council of Ministers must meet to decide the new measures that will come into force on December 9, with an expected impact until January 4, the first Monday after the New Year.
