An Indian declared dead by doctors after a serious motorcycle accident showed signs of life when he was already on an autopsy table, just before the start of the post-mortem examination, an Indian health official said on Wednesday.

The 27-year-old man from the city of Mahalingapur in the southern state of Karnataka was transported in critical condition last weekend to a private hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

His family transferred the “body” to a nearby public hospital, where he was to undergo an autopsy on Monday.

Relatives told local press that a forensic doctor saw the body, which was already on the autopsy table, suddenly moving.

A health services official confirmed the incident and told AFP news agency that the young man was immediately transferred to another hospital, adding that his health has improved.

The official admitted that the doctors of the private establishment “misjudged” the situation.

According to the same source, it is up to the family to decide whether to file a medical malpractice complaint.
