A man died this Friday morning from a scam on the A2, in the Marateca area, Palmela. The crash was so violent that the car broke in two. The driver, the sole occupant of the car, died immediately.

The vehicle collided with a gantry displaying traffic signs. The driver is suspected of losing control of the vehicle due to hydroplaning which made braking impossible.

The alert was issued at 9.55am on Friday. The projection was carried out in a south-north direction of highway 2 (A2), just after the Marateca node, which connects with the A13, to Santarém.

The firefighters from Alcácer do Sal, the GNR and the emergency medical vehicle and resuscitation from the Setúbal Hospital attended the scene.

The victim, a 69-year-old man, was already dead when rescuers arrived. The violence was such that the driver had limbs amputated. The body was transferred to the São Bernardo Hospital, in Setúbal.

Ten vehicles and 20 operatives were involved in this event, which has not yet led to the cut off of the highway.

The GNR Highway Accident Crime Investigation Center (NICAV) will now investigate the causes of the accident.
