Two pilgrims, a man and a woman, attempted to enter Capelinha das Aparições today, just before the May pilgrimage ceremonies began, after being apprehended by GNR soldiers and guards at the Fatima Shrine.

A man, already after being warned by security guards, jumped over the bars and passed the barriers on the north side of the sanctuary, to reach Capelinha das Aparições, the communication director of the Sanctuary of Fátima, Carmo Rodeia told reporters. .

According to Carmo Rodeia, the guards at the scene were unable to stop the man, who will also have turned against the GNR army.

Once inside the compound and near Capelinha das Aparições, the man, who was holding a painting with an image of the Virgin of Fatima, was beaten by a GNR soldier and was immediately immobilized.

According to the communication officer at the sanctuary, the man is currently being held by the GNR.

The man had already tried, during the afternoon, to enter the sanctuary, on the south side, but the institution’s security guards prevented him.

During the incident, the Lusa agency identified a woman who was also trying to communicate with Capelinha das Aparições, screaming “God help me.”

Carmo Rodeia clarified that the sanctuary does not yet know if the two people have any connection, referring to the fact that the woman was also held by the GNR.

The international pilgrimage in May, which started today, takes place for the first time in its history without pilgrims in the Sanctuary of Fátima, following the government’s decisions regarding the covid-19 pandemic, with only those directly involved in the different moments of celebration
