Madeira will insist that the European Union determine a “uniform criterion” applicable to all member states for the control of covid-19 in the trips to be made at origin, the Regional Government stressed today.

“We will continue to insist, despite the model we have adopted in Madeira, which was very important for the European Union through the Commission, to take a uniform position for all states and demand that the control be done at the beginning of the trip. ”Declared the Secretary of Tourism and Culture of Madeira.

Eduardo Jesús intervened on the sidelines of the ceremony for the delivery of 24 medals of tourism merit by the Government of Madeira (gold, silver and bronze) to various people and entities, recognizing the contribution to the sector, which marks World Tourism Day today.

The Madeiran official considered that the determination of this control measure would be “extraordinarily important” for Madeira and that “the recovery and activity in this sector would necessarily be different, even with the effect of this dimension of the pandemic that is being experienced throughout Europe. ”.

“There is no doubt about this,” said the official, considering that “this decision is delayed and until it happens, the effect of the pandemic will be felt, despite the enormous effort that the Regional Government is making so that these consequences are what smallest possible ”.

Eduardo Jesús pointed out that “Madeira has an advantage here compared to other destinations, mainly those that are traditionally competitors”, which allowed the region today to have “a unique position, because there is no other tourist destination in the world like Madeira ”In terms of security abroad.

But, he added, “the sector is hostage to demand and demand is hostage to trust and this fear that it will settle with the pandemic.”

“Madeira has made a unique journey and it has clearly earned it a unique position. Madeira is the destination best prepared to guarantee people’s trust. Now it is necessary to get here and it is this part of trust that I need to earn ”, he emphasized.

The official also pointed out that another “strong battle in Madeira” managed to demonstrate to the issuing countries that the region has an epidemiological situation “completely different from the continental space”, with the absence of deaths caused by covid-19.

Even with the definition of the criteria for the number of infected per 100,000 inhabitants defined by the European Commission, the archipelago is placed “in the green corridor of any European country”.

“It would be important to clarify this definition,” he said, recalling that the “effort made with the United Kingdom” in making this distinction “the reaction was immediate and the largest English operator in Madeira doubled the frequencies” for the region.

For this reason, Eduardo Jesús, defended that it is necessary “for this recognition to exist, which is not too demanding, it is for the simple justice of the reality that was lived” in the archipelago.

Given the announcements of layoffs in the sectors related to tourism and the closure of hotel units, Eduardo Jesús stressed that all the measures adopted by the Madeira government have as a priority “ensuring employment.”

According to the latest data published on Saturday by the regional health authority, Madeira registers 54 active cases of covid-19, reporting 211 confirmed situations and 157 recovered patients.
