Macron infection prompts quarantines for five European leaders

At least five leaders of the European Union have been quarantined for having been in recent days with French President Emmanuel Macron, who this Thursday confirmed that he is infected with covid-19.

The heads of the Portuguese governments, António Costa, Belgian, Alexander de Croo, Spanish, Pedro Sánchez, and Luxembourgish, Xavier Bettel, as well as the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, voluntarily isolated themselves, just in case.

They were all together at the European Council on the 10th and 11th of this month in Brussels, with António Costa again with Macron on Wednesday and Sánchez and De Croo with the French president on Monday.

With negative results to the test for the new coronavirus are the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.

This afternoon, the head of the Spanish Government also presented a negative result for the new coronavirus, but will remain in isolation until at least 24 this month, despite not showing any symptoms of illness.

A European source explained that, according to the Elysee Palace, the seat of the French presidency, Macron must have been infected between Monday night and the following day.

Also today, the Portuguese prime minister voluntarily isolated himself and decided to cancel official visits to São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau, between Friday and Sunday, after having been with Macron on Wednesday.

The decision was transmitted to the Lusa agency by an official government source, who said that this morning Costa tested the new coronavirus that he had scheduled for several days before leaving for official visits to São Tomé and Príncipe and Guinea-Bissau.

For the same reasons, the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, also announced today, on the social network Twitter, that he voluntarily decided to self-quarantine, at least until receiving the result of the diagnostic test, in order to protect all people that surround it. .

For his part, the head of the Belgian Government, Alexander de Croo, indicated, even today, that he will respect a “preventive quarantine” also until he has knowledge of the results of the test that he will carry out today.

De Croo, in addition to being at the summit, was with Macron for the last time last Monday at a ceremony in Paris on the 60th anniversary of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).

European leaders who were absent from the European Council for issues related precisely to the covid-19 include the Croatian Prime Minister, Andrej Plenkovic, whose results were positive days before, and his Estonian counterpart, Juri Ratas, who was then Quarantine.

Charles Michel and the Secretary General of the OECD, the Mexican Ángel Gurría, have also been voluntarily quarantined as a precautionary measure.

The covid-19 pandemic caused at least 1,649,927 deaths as a result of more than 74.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.
