Lisbon, Sintra, Amadora, Loures and Oeiras with the highest increase in cases

In the last week, the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) and the municipalities of Guimarães and Gaia registered the highest increase in new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. The situation was made this Monday by the Director General of Health, questioned about what are the critical points, at this time, of the epidemic in the country. In July 19 parishes of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area were marked, which at that time were in a state of calamity. The distinction by parish did not occur again, although some municipalities disclose this information to the inhabitants. In the list of cases by municipality, which the General Directorate of Health (DGS) updates on Mondays, it seems that the municipalities of Lisbon, Sintra, Amadora and Loures registered the highest increase in new cases. In the municipality of Lisbon, 307 new cases have been reported since Monday of last week. In Sintra, 264 new cases were diagnosed, in Amadora 155 and Loures 147. In AML, the municipality of Oeiras was, however, the one that registered the highest percentage increase in this period, 8%, with 118 new cases. To the north, Guimarães, with 98 new cases in the last seven days, was the municipality with the highest increase in infections in absolute terms. In Vila Nova de Gaia there were 93 new cases. In both counties, the increase is almost twice that of the Porto municipality.

Now there are also 12 more municipalities on the list released by the DGS, which only begins to report the number of cases per municipality based on the three diagnoses, a rule followed since the beginning of the epidemic and justified for privacy reasons. In Alentejo, there are now four cases in the municipality of Nisa and another four in the municipality of Vila Velha de Ródão, which so far have not appeared in the DGS statistics. Viana do Alentejo and Vila Viçosa, both with three cases, also appear for the first time on the list by municipality. The municipalities of Castro Verde, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, Sardoal and Tabuaço also appear for the first time on the list, with three cases each. In Madeira, the municipalities of Porto Moniz and Santana are now on the list with three cases.

The Sunday with the most diagnoses

This Monday, 613 new cases of covid-19 were confirmed in the country, data referring to the diagnoses made on Sunday, generally a day with fewer laboratory confirmations. The record turned out to be the highest on a Sunday since the epidemic began, and the level of evidence is now also higher than it was in the first months of the epidemic.

At the press conference, Secretary of State António Lacerda Sales reiterated that the country is entering a new phase of the pandemic and that the tests will continue to be central. Last Friday, he revealed, the record of 21,700 tests carried out in the country was broken.

Of the new cases confirmed on Monday, 10% were over 70, the age group most at risk, which was considered a positive indicator. The director general of Health even said that the current norm does not predict an increase in mortality. “The number of infected people older than 70 years has been low and mortality is mainly associated with people older than 70 and 80 years. This pattern that we are witnessing, in which new cases appear mainly in young people and adults of working age, is protective in relation to mortality ”, Graça Freitas underlined. However, with the increase in cases, there is also an increase in diagnoses in the older age groups. This Sunday, 62 cases of covid-19 were diagnosed in people over 70 years old, compared to 36 cases on Sunday last week.

Almost 100 more people hospitalized in a week

Although it is still well below what was registered at the peak of the epidemic, the increase in hospitalized patients with covid-19 has increased in recent days. Compared to Monday last week, there were 99 more hospitalized patients yesterday than a week ago, out of a total of 477, the highest number since July 16. The trend is not seen in intensive care, where there has been a slight increase in hospitalizations. At a press conference, the Secretary of State for Health, António Lacerda Sales, stressed that at this time there is no pressure in the hospitals. “In 21,500 beds we have just over 400 hospitalizations. It says everything about what is not pressure and there is the capacity to expand to occur in situations of greater pressure ”. In terms of intensive care capacity, the occupancy rate is 66%, corresponding to 18% for patients with covid-19, Lacerda Sales said. I tried to find out if the levels of death, infection or hospital occupancy that could lead to further measurements are now defined, but got no answer until the edit was finished. The country enters a state of contingency this Tuesday, with concentrations limited to ten people and a ban on alcohol consumption on public roads extended to the entire country. After 8:00 p.m. it can only be sold with meals. For travel information, commercial establishments may only open after 10 am, with the exception of “pastry shops, cafeterias, hairdressers and gyms.”
