In the week of August 23 to 30, Portugal registered 2,292 new cases of infection by the coronavirus responsible for covid-19, which represents an increase of 54% compared to 1,486 the previous week, according to data released this Monday 31 of August. , by the General Directorate of Health (DGS).

Geographic distribution data at the municipal level, reported by the DGS on Mondays, show that there were 45 municipalities in the country with at least 10 additional cases in the week ending Sunday.

The largest increases in absolute terms corresponded to the two most populated municipalities: Lisbon and Sintra, with 143 and 139 new infections, respectively.

However, in several other municipalities of Lisbon and the Tagus Valley significant increases were also observed, such as Vila Franca de Xira (99 new cases), Amadora (83), Azambuja (74) and Odivelas (57).

With a significant increase in new infections there are counties such as Braga (55), Guimarães 52), Vila Verde (51) and Vila Nova de Famalicão (44).

The situation continues to be worrying in the neighboring municipalities of Vila do Conde and Póvoa do Varzim, which registered 53 and 46 new cases, respectively. The outbreaks in the fishing community of Vilacondense continue without showing signs of slowing down.

And there are several less populated counties where the number of new cases has also risen sharply. As examples, in addition to Azambuja, the municipalities of Arouca, with 30 additional infections, Santarém (39) or Alcácer do Sal (21).

Lisbon Metropolitan Area with more than 800 new cases
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) saw the number of new cases rise by 831, an acceleration compared to the previous three weeks, in which the 18 AML municipalities had registered 611, 694 and 697 new infections.

Since the start of the pandemic, AML has added 24,739 cases, which corresponds to 42.6% of the country’s total. This despite the fact that the AML population represents only 27.8% of the national total. And this week the municipality of the capital exceeded the threshold of 5,000 cases.

By concentrating 11 of the 24 municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, AML has the four municipalities with the highest number of cases: Lisbon (5,087), Sintra (4,279), Loures (2,539) and Amadora (2,494).

The Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP) also increased in new cases, with 363 additional infections. In the previous weeks, AMP had registered 162, 223 and 218 new cases.

The biggest increases this week within the AMP corresponded to Vila do Conde (53), Póvoa do Varzim (46), Matosinhos (42) and Porto (40). The Porto Metropolitan Area has risen to 11,275 cases since the start of the pandemic.

Maia is the 14th municipality with more than a thousand cases
The number of municipalities with more than a thousand infected since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 14 this week, with the inclusion of the municipality of Maia, which already registers 1,001 infections.

In addition to the four AML counties with the highest number of cases, Vila Nova de Gaia now has 1,920 infected, followed by Odivelas (1,806), Cascais (1,596), Porto (1,585), Matosinhos (1,394), Braga (1,379), Vila Franca de Xira (1,323), Oeiras (1,300), Gondomar (1,132) and Maia (1,001).

There are 74 municipalities throughout the country with 100 or more infected and the number of municipalities with at least three cases – DGS does not identify municipalities with two or fewer confirmed cases – amounts to 267, with the inclusion of Ribeira Grande and São João da Pescar .
