A collective protest by the runners caused the 19th stage of the Volta a Itália to be shortened by about 100 kilometers due to worsening weather conditions, heavy rain and cold.
This was supposed to be the longest route of the race, from Morbegno to Asti, at a distance of 258 kilometers, but the riders also protested after Thursday’s tough stage, in which he took off João Almeida’s pink jersey.
Taking into account the weather situation, the race has been neutralized at Km. 8. It will follow the updates on the restart.

First, they all stayed under the tents without advancing to the starting line, then they ended up leaving late, but just eight kilometers after the start, the runners stopped and got on the buses waiting for directions for a new start of the stage. This one got to settle 140 kilometers later in Abbiategrasso, with the mediation of the Union of Cyclists in the organization.
The race will restart from Abbiategrasso (MI), keeping all intermediate sprints active from there.

Thanks to the jury and #Round organizer to listen #CPA request. the #Health is the priority, especially in this # COVID-19 period. Shrinking today’s stage will not diminish the show, but it will allow the immune defenses of the #riders so as not to take a greater risk. ?? Monguzzi pic.twitter.com/1ZKmVq8CdR
