Helena Marques, journalist and writer, who died this Monday at the age of 85, informed the LeYa publishing house: “It was with deep sadness that LeYa and Don Quijote received yesterday [segunda-feira] at night, news of the death of the writer Helena Marques. Born in 1935, Helena Marques was a journalist for 36 years. She was deputy director of the Diário de Notícias, where she finished her career, which began at the Diário de Notícias in Funchal. He also visited other newspapers such as A Capital, República and A Luta.
According to the statement, between 1992 and 2010 he published five novels and a book of stories on Don Quixote. His first book, “The last pier” (1992), received the Grand Prize for Novel and Romance from the Association of Portuguese Writers., the Ler Magazine / Círculo de Leitores Prize, the Maximum Revelation Prize, the Procopio Prize for Literature and the Bordallo Prize for Literature at the Casa da Imprensa.
It was followed by “The Seated Goddess” (1994), “Third People” (1998) and “The Red Ibis of Guyana” (2002), the short story book “Ilhas Contadas” (2007) and “Bazar Alemão” (2010). . His work is translated into several languages such as German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Romanian and Bulgarian.
In 2013 he was awarded the Gazeta Award of Merit.
