The Portuguese João Almeida (Deceuninck-QuickStep) reinforced his pink jersey today, in a 16th stage of the Tour of Italy on a bicycle won by the Slovenian Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-McLaren), resistant to the day’s escape.

Tratnik, 30, cut the goal at 6:04:36, necessary to travel the 229 kilometers between Udine and San Daniele del Friuli, seven seconds ahead of Australian Ben O’Connor (NTT), second, and Italian Enrico Battaglin (Bahrain-McLaren), third at 1.14 minutes, all members of the day’s break, which featured almost 30 elements.

In the fight for the overall, João Almeida attacked in the final part of the peloton and won two seconds behind the competition, with two Sunweb men as the closest pursuers, the Dutchman Wilco Kelderman, in second to 17, and the Australian Jai Hindley, in the third at 2.58 minutes.

On Wednesday, the 17th stage joins Bassano del Grappa with Madonna di Campiglio for 203 kilometers, with three top mountain counts, the last of which coincides with the goal.
