The counting of votes in the US presidential elections in the state of Georgia confirmed the victory of Democrat Joe Biden, local officials announced Thursday.

The initial recount gave the Democrat only about 14,000 votes ahead of his rival, US President Donald Trump.

The margin of victory was so small that a manual count was performed. The gap narrowed slightly, with Joe Biden now with just over 12,200 votes ahead.

The difference between the two candidates is still very small. Trump, who disputes defeat, may therefore request another recount, clarified the office of the Georgia secretary of state, responsible for the elections.

Biden’s victory extends the Electoral College lead over the Republican candidate for the White House.

Biden was declared the winner of the November 7 presidential election, having won three major states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Biden now has 306 delegates in the Electoral College, to Trump’s 232.
