João Leão spoke with journalists after the proposal of the Government of State Budgets for 2021 (OE2021) was delivered to Parliament and after having met with the President of the Assembly of the Republic, Ferro Rodrigues.
This is João Leão’s first Budget as Minister of Finance, a position he began to hold last June, after having replaced the current governor of the Bank of Portugal, Mário Centeno.
In the brief statement, Leão had at his side the Secretary of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Duarte Cordeiro, and for the Budget, Claudia Joaquim. The replacement of Mário Centeno in the Finance portfolio repeated several times the idea that it is “a good budget for Portugal and good for the Portuguese.”
It prioritizes giving financial and human resources to combat the covid-19 pandemic. It is committed and its main objective is the recovery of the economy, the protection of employment and the income of the Portuguese. It is a Budget without austerity, which does not add crisis to crisis ”, he said.
“On the contrary, the Budget is committed to the rapid recovery of the economy and the continuous improvement of Portuguese revenues. In this sense, it is also a responsible budget ”, I continue.
In response to journalists’ questions about the demands of the Bloco de Esquerda and the PCP, João Leão insisted on the ideas that, on the part of the Government, there will be “openness of negotiation and a spirit of dialogue.”
“It is difficult not to understand how this Budget, with openness and availability for negotiation, cannot be approved,” he declared.
The minister sent more details about the proposal to the press conference this Tuesday, at 9:00 am, in the Salão Nobre of the Ministry of Finance.
