João Baptista, a former bassist at the Hotel Belle Chase, died in Coimbra on April 4 of liver disease.

The musician, born on May 2, 1965 in Castelo Branco, had been hospitalized for a few months at the Coimbra Hospital and University Center (CHUC), where he died.

João Baptista was also a founding member of Extrema Unção and Café Bagdad.

“He was an extraordinary musician. I remember when they recorded the second album, which featured producer Joe Gore, who worked with Tom Waits and PJ Harvey, he recorded the bass almost entirely on the first ‘take’. I said, ‘If you lived in the United States you would earn money only as a studio musician, ‘”said Rui Ferreira, head of the Conimbricense publisher Lux Records.
