João Almeida wins second and dreams of third place in the Giro

The rider Deceuninck-Quick Step won second in the individual general and could try to reach third place in the final stage, this Sunday. Hindley and Hart are tied up front!

The Tour of Italy suffered another turnaround on the penultimate day and João Almeida tried to take advantage of an Ineos offensive to regain positions, but only came close to Wilco Kelderman, who was dethroned from the lead by Jai Hindley, who stayed with Tao Geoghegan Hart. .

On a twentieth 190km stage between Alba and Sestriere, climbing three times to this ski resort, it was on the penultimate climb that Ineos, with Rohan Dennis again pulling Tao Geoghegan Hart, attacked to change careers.

Kelderman relented early, but Hindley, who was second overall, always followed Hart, just as he had on the queen stage, losing only the stage and the final meters. The stage bonuses were worth an unexpected draw between them in first place.

João Almeida still had to pull Kelderman for a few kilometers, but received valuable help from his team – cleverly, the Deceuninck-Quick Step, put several riders in the race, to help their leader in the final stage – and managed to attack and isolate already on the last climb, four kilometers from the final goal.

The Portuguese was fourth, one minute away, and recovered 34 seconds for Kelderman and Pello Bilbao, which fuels the hope of continuing to recover positions.
The Giro ends this Sunday, with a 15.7 km time trial in Milan, with João Almeida being the favorite among the first of the general classification.

If the individual event decides the winner of the Giro, for third place the great candidate is Wilco Kelderman, who is a good counter-vigilante and has a 1m42 advantage over João Almeida. Only the break in the form of the Dutchman raises some doubts.

As for the fourth place, and the young Portuguese 23 seconds behind Pello Bilbao, it is a realistic goal, despite the short distance of this last “time”.
