The president of the Portuguese Firefighters League, Jaime Marta Soares, was accused by the Public Ministry (MP) of embezzling the exercise of a public office when he directed, in 2013, the municipality of Vila Nova de Poiares.

The events date back to the end of the municipal mandate of 2013, with the award of the equipment supply contract imputed, without any formality, already within the limited period of limited management of the local authorities, with adulteration of the contract dates so far before the start. from that period, “says a note posted on the MP’s website.

Contacted by the Lusa agency, Jaime Marta Soares, who presided over that municipality in the Coimbra district for almost 40 years, said he was surprised by the accusation and showed “a clear conscience”, saying that he never did “anything without the law.”

“These contractual matters were handled by the services based on deliberations by the Chamber,” said the former mayor, who considers the charge “absurd”.

The former mayor of Vila Nova de Poiares has also said that he is “available to provide all the necessary clarifications in this regard.”

According to the MP’s note, the Coimbra Regional Criminal Investigation and Action Department has also filed charges against a municipality employee and a partner of a company that supplies office equipment.

The MP accuses the three elements of the practice of crimes of malpractice of the holder of a political office, economic participation in business and falsification of documents, and demands the loss of the advantages in the amount corresponding to the contract entered into.

Led by the Public Ministry of the Coimbra Regional Criminal Investigation and Action Department, the investigation had the collaboration of the Coimbra Judicial Police.

Jaime Marta Soares, 77, headed the municipality of Vila Nova de Poiares, in the district of Coimbra, between 1974 and 2013, and since 2011 has presided over the Portuguese Firefighters League.
