“It’s a big mistake” – Jornal Económico

Luís Marques Mendes, political commentator and former PSD leader, says he does not understand the government’s management of the pandemic, especially the issue of Formula 1 in the Algarve, which brought together 27,500 people at the Portimão International Speedway.

“You don’t have to be a scientist or an epidemiologist to realize that this is a mistake,” defended Marques Mendes, who speaks of loss of credibility and inconsistency. “The same government that took the good decision this week, although tough and difficult, to prohibit circulation between municipalities on the Day of the Dead, this weekend authorized the movement of thousands of people to the Algarve,” argues the Social Democrat.

In fact, one of the factors that leads to Marques Mendes’ misunderstanding is precisely the displacement of a large mass of people from the North, the epicenter of the pandemic at this time at the national level, which could lead to the spread of the disease towards the South.

The commentator took his place precisely with an analysis of data from the Covid-19 pandemic in Portugal, showing great concern about the evolution of the disease in Portugal. Marques Mendes even says that healthcare professionals he spoke to had never seen “so much pressure” on the system.

Thus, the evolution of the situation leads Marques Mendes to consider that the state of emergency “will be inevitable, more day less day”, as well as the night curfew. But for the Social Democrat, there are more important issues in managing the pandemic.

“We are in a second wave that, from what we have seen, will be worse than the first. We need to have a minimum of political and technical consensus, social cohesion and national unity to combat this pandemic. This environment existed in a first phase; it no longer exists, ”says the former ‘orange’ leader, who calls for better communication with the country’s leaders, that is, the Prime Minister or the President of the Republic.

Regarding the State Budget, the lawyer is not surprised by the decision of the Left Bloc not to make the proposal viable, anticipating that the party will be sanctioned in the next elections for the “incoherence” and “immaturity” revealed.

Recalling that the party made possible previous proposals through funds destined for the Novo Banco and now a proposal that does not foresee any injection in the bank has failed, Marques Mendes believes that this position may not go well with part of the blocking electorate. Still, the “theater” of the last days will not affect the approval of the document. “Whoever failed in this SO committed suicide politically”, according to the opinion of the Social Democrat.

The words of the Pope, who recognized the right of homosexual couples to de facto unions, also deserved comment. Marques Mendes sees a “brave” position from the Church leader, who, he argues, intends to project a future with greater recognition inside and outside the institution.
