Due to the new coronavirus pandemic, foreclosures were suspended until June 30. Only pledges continue to be executed, delaying IRS payments that taxpayers would be entitled to offset credits related to debt in foreclosure.

The Ombudsman has received a large number of complaints and has already requested clarifications from the Director General of the Tax Authority, Newspaper of business this Wednesday. According to the Ombudsman, there is an “act of coercive collection, prohibited between March 9 and June 30”.

AT claims that the execution of the proceedings is suspended and that it includes promises of bank deposits or wages, which take place monthly for those who commit in installments. Social Security cast doubt on this and the banks eventually proceeded with the foreclosures. The Ombudsman began to receive complaints.

At the end of April, AT informed the Portuguese Banking Association, Social Security and Caixa Geral de Aposentações about the suspension of encumbrances until the end of June.
