India sets new world record for covid-19 cases in one day

India today registered 78,761 cases of the new coronavirus in the last 24 hours, a new world record, health officials announced.

The previous daily record had been set by the United States on July 17, when it diagnosed 77,638 infections, according to data compiled by the France-Presse (AFP) news agency.

India is the country with the highest number of new infections last week (488,271), ahead of the United States (293,419), which today is approaching the limit of six million officially declared cases, Brazil (263,791), Colombia (66,811) and Argentina (64,437).

The Indian Ministry of Health has also announced 948 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths to 63,498.

More than 25 million cases of infection with the new coronavirus have been reported worldwide, more than half in the American continent, according to an AFP count.

In total, at least 25 million cases have been diagnosed. Nearly four out of ten cases were detected in the United States and Brazil, by far the two most affected countries, with 5,960,652 infected (182,760 deaths) and 3,846,153 infections (120,262 deaths), respectively.

Globally, there are 842,915 deaths caused by covid-19, according to AFP’s count from official sources.

In Europe, the highest number of fatalities occurs in the United Kingdom, followed by Italy, France and Spain.

Portugal accounts for 1,818 deaths in 57,448 cases of infection.

In Africa, there are more than 29,000 confirmed deaths in more than 1.2 million infected people in 55 countries.

Among the African countries that have Portuguese as their official language, Angola leads in number of deaths and Equatorial Guinea in number of cases.
