The independent candidate for the presidential elections, Ana Gomes, guaranteed this Monday that if she is elected President of the Republic, she will ask for a review of the legalization of Chega, as it is a party “that has the purpose of destroying democracy.”

In an interview with TVI tonight, Ana Gomes considered that the party headed by André Ventura “should never have been legalized” because “it has a racist, xenophobic discourse and has the purpose of destroying democracy.”

“I can commit now: being elected, one of the first actions I will take will be to send a message to the Attorney General requesting a review of Chega’s legality, not only because of the program, but also because of its repeated xenophobic practice. , racist, violent, ”said a former socialist MEP.

For the same reason, considering that Chega is an undemocratic party, Ana Gomes would not consider investing a government supported by Chega. “This is a big difference for me in relation to Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa,” said the presidential candidate.

Ana Gomes argued that it is “incompatible” for a President of the Republic to swear to defend the Constitution and take possession of the Government supported by André Ventura’s party, since it is a political force “that wants to destroy the Constitution.

“I do not regret being a member of the MRPP”

Ana Gomes also spoke about her political past, which includes a year of activism in the MRPP, which she did not regret. “It was a great citizenship school,” he said.

The presidential candidate explained that she joined the MRPP because she had “an agenda for democracy, for freedom,” which she left because it was “critical” in relation to April 25.

“It was a party that was on the right side of November 25, 1975 with the forces that prevented a totalitarian coup. And it was after that that I left because of an incredulous attitude towards April 25. I thought that April 25 was the promise of democracy and that it was worth gambling and that is why I left the MRPP in January 1976. And I do not regret having been a member of the MRPP. Today there would be many things that I would not do again, but it was a great citizenship school, ”said Ana Gomes.
