Landing problems

Yesterday debuted “Stewardess”, on HBO Portugal, a series that, despite having a nice premise, can take a few minutes to get used to. Not because it’s bad, but because the main character is played by Kaley Cuoco who, for 12 years, appeared on our screens as Penny in “The Big Bang Theory.” It will be impossible for someone who has minimally accompanied the famous sitcom take off from the popular character. But let’s go to the story.

Cassie was a stewardess in her thirties, quite satisfied with her life. His work allowed him to know the world and have a relaxed lifestyle in which he did not have great responsibilities and where he could do whatever he wanted, with whoever he wanted. On one of her business flights, heading to Banquecoque, she meets a businessman with whom she “makes fun” and who gives her contact if he wants to spend some time with her in Thailand. She ends up doing it and they are engulfed in an atmosphere of romance where they go for a walk, have dinner together (with lots of drinks to mix), and finally share the same bed.

One morning when Cassie wakes up, the businessman is dead next to her and she doesn’t remember much about the night before due to a “blackout” caused by drinking. The panic of the situation leads her to decide to clean up any traces of her and continue with her next trip, leaving her dead lover at the hotel. However, even though her body has left that scene, her mind keeps returning there constantly and the hostess has imaginary conversations with the deceased businessman to try to remember what happened.

Was she really to blame? Did someone frame you? As he searches for evidence and appears more guilty to the FBI, which is already investigating the case, the answers may lie with a mysterious woman he has a fuzzy memory of at his Bangkok hotel. Drinking too much will do.

  • From book to screen: The series is based on a play of the same name by Chris Bohjalian, released in 2018.
  • Penny in her prime: For now, critics have praised Kaley Cuoco’s performance and the ability to evolve into something different than what we had become used to.
  • On the agenda: After three episodes released this Thursday, two will be released the next and followed by two more the next, and the final episode will be released on December 17.

Slightly better than Monopoly

For those who have siblings, it is known that competitiveness is something that is part of everything they do, be it in school, in the job they get or in the games they played with each other as children. “Game night” It was a half action, half comedy film released in 2018 and tells the story of a game night with friends, but of which Monopoly or Trivial Pursuit were not a part. Max and Annie met at a “Quiz night” in a bar and since then they have created the ritual of organizing a series of games at home where they can practice their competitiveness and catch up with their closest friends (usually couples).

The game night on which the movie is based was going to be different than what they were used to: on the one hand, they were upset to be at the house of Max’s super successful brother, whom he was envious; on the other hand, they were more rested, since they did not have to hide another night from their strange neighbor who insisted on asking when the next game night would be. But then what would be different this time? Max’s brother hired a company that specializes in staging fictitious kidnappings to create a competition in which he would be kidnapped and wait to see which couple met him first. For that, he left a series of clues scattered around his house that couples would have to discover and interpret in order to “save” him. The winner would take home his sports car, which, by chance, was his brother’s dream car.

The problem? What seems like a joke is quickly mixed with a serious kidnapping that puts his brother, Max, Annie and their friends at risk. Instead of counting cheeses, they will find themselves in a situation of escape and chase by gangsters, which, surprisingly, will lead them to discover more about each other.

  • Luxury cast: the film stars Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Rachel McAdams (“The Notebook”), Kyle Chandler (“Friday Night Lights”), among others.
  • Where to see: the 100 minutes of good fun can be watched on HBO or rented on YouTube.

The advantage of being safe

What if there was a clinical test that would allow us to discover our soul mate? It is in this scenario very to “Black Mirror” that unfolds the series “Soulmates” which premiered a few weeks ago on the AMC channel. In the year 2023, a company called Soul Connex developed a technology that allows each human being to find the particle of the soul that, apparently, is shared by two people who are destined to be together. Once the test is done, the company simply goes to its database and join the people who share the particle in the same way that Tinder gathers people who do “swipe right” Each other.

So in the first episode, as more and more people are taking the test (married, single, old, young, straight, and gay) in search of true love, a couple who met in college and who have been 15 years Together she begins to see their relationship fall apart, like so many other people around her, with doubts about whether they will be the right person for each other.

The series turns out to be a reflection on the impact that technology and advances in science can have on the love and intimate relationships that people choose to have. In the plot, the “soul mates” hardly lose a single coffee to meet and, more week less week, there is a wedding scheduled because science and their biology have already given them the guarantee that this is the ideal person for the rest of his life. It may all sound very strange and peculiar, but are we that far from a reality like this?

  • This reminds me of something: when I said it was a “Black Mirror” series, it wasn’t an accident. Not only is the series written by Will Bridges, who was one of the writers of the famous series, but there are This episode, which can be considered as an inspiration for “Soulmates”.
  • An anthology: this means that in each of its six episodes, new characters will appear to represent new narratives within the world of “Soulmates.”

Final credits

  • Musical releases: the big release of the day was Miley Cyrus’ album titled “Plastic hearts”.
  • The best storyteller: In an 18-minute video on Instagram, comedian Dave Chapelle shared how his most successful show ended up in the hands of a station that continues to profit from his work without seeing a penny. Look here.
