Due to movement restrictions between municipalities due to the pandemic, the Lisbon PSP organized several road control actions. It is on the 25 de Abril Bridge where some drivers are outraged and others are already satisfied with the measures, despite the traffic.

At 4:30 pm today, a long line of cars formed at the entrance of the bridge deck, heading North-South, towards Almada (Setúbal), after some 20 police elements had placed signaling cones to begin . to the police operation.

“This has to be, it has to be. I think this is a bit wrong, you have to be very careful with all this,” he stressed to the Lusa José Assunção agency, who alluded to the increase in cases of covid-19 in Portugal.

According to the Carris driver, the Public Security Police are just doing their job.

For Sub-Commissioner Cátia Brás, from the Lisbon Traffic Division, the inspection operation is more “an awareness-raising and educational action” to alert drivers that the country “is going through a critical period of pandemic and that the chains of contagion must be cut. “

“We are doing a selective inspection. There is no procedure, there is no standard of which vehicles we stop,” he explained, adding that the PSP is trying to find out what makes people move between municipalities.

According to Cátia Brás, all cases are evaluated and the reasons for the trip are verified.

“We assess the situation on a case-by-case basis and check whether the driver is really complying or not,” he said, warning that “if a driver makes false statements, he will incur a crime of disobedience.”

Cátia Brás recalled that today several road control actions were carried out and that the national balance of the different police operations will only be known next Tuesday, November 3.

The movement of people outside the municipality of residence is limited in the continental territory of Portugal from 00:00 hours today until 06:00 hours on Tuesday, within the scope of measures to combat the pandemic.

At the beginning of the deck of the 25 de Abril Bridge, the line is already finished. Many people return home after a long day at work. As is the case of Manuel Veiga, who lives in the South Bank and considers that the measures are heterogeneous.

“I think they are not bad. What should have been more homogeneous of them? How is it that an Avante party has so many people and nobody replaces and people walk here in their normal life and, deep down, they are preventing to make his life ”, exclaimed the surveyor.

Manuel Veiga said that it was “boring and boring” for people to be “immense hours in lines”, at the risk of losing their job.

“I don’t come from a cafe. I come from work. I’m going to have to pay my taxes. I come from work, I don’t come on tour. I think if this government wanted to do something useful it was to see where people go. cemetery this weekend, take care of the cemeteries, now don’t make people lose their jobs, “he said.

Further afield, the police detain Piedosa Balailda from Sintra, after appearing in court for personal reasons.

“The situation is difficult. But it has to be. As for the police situation, it is their job, it has to be done,” he said.

Bruno Almeida has also explained that the PSP inspection action is necessary, since it will be a weekend with “a lot of people moving”.

“With the increase in cases that has been taking place in the country, I think it makes a lot of sense,” he observed, indicating that he was already waiting for the police to “stop asking for a statement and justify the change of province.”

PSP and GNR are conducting inspection and awareness-raising operations across the country until November 3, during All Saints ‘Day and All Souls’ Day, when many Portuguese flock to cemeteries.

The restrictive measures appear at a time when the number of infected and dead by covid-19 has increased in Portugal.

To move between municipalities, people must be accompanied by a justifying statement from the employer or make a statement, under honor, if the move occurs between neighboring municipalities to the habitual residence or in the same Metropolitan Area.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.1 million deaths and more than 45.1 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report prepared by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 2,468 people died from 137,272 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.
