“I did not leave my party after the worst electoral result in its history,” says Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, amid much criticism of what he calls a small group of internal opponents united only by the “urgent need” to overthrow him.
The president of the CDS-PP affirmed that he will not oppose the convening of an extraordinary congress after the municipal elections, if the militants understand it, but stressed that he wants to “carry out the project” for which he was elected.
“If, after the municipal elections, the militants have the intention and are willing to consider holding a congress, know that I am not opposed to this discussion,” said the centrist leader.
However, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos wanted to leave a “firm and genuine” appeal to the leaders of the CDS, in the second intervention he made to the National Council: “That we do not set a bad example for the country and respect the work of those who they have given body and soul to the party in each municipality of our Portugal ”, he asked, saying that the current moment of the party is damaging the municipal confrontation.
In an intervention that the journalists saw, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos assumed “with humility” that he made “mistakes and that not everything turned out as he wanted.”
“Despite the completely new and austere circumstances that we face in the party, in the country and in right-wing political chess, I feel and know that we can do more, better and in some cases also differently,” he said. .
Stressing that “the mandates are going to be fulfilled,” the centrist leader stated that it is his intention “to carry out the project for which” it was “commissioned by the militants, which has a duration of two years.”
Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos was elected president of the CDS a year ago, at the end of January 2020.
Some 250 members of the CDS-PP National Council are meeting this Saturday by videoconference, to discuss and vote a motion of confidence to the National Political Commission presented by the leader, Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos, in honor of former Vice President Adolfo Mesquita Nunes. he had proposed holding an early elective congress (before the municipal elections) and announced that he would be a candidate for leadership in the event of such an important meeting.
After almost five hours of discussion, it was decided that the vote will be secret.
Adolfo Mesquita Nunes even left the work, but returned to the National Council when the decision to vote by secret ballot was announced.
