Hurricane Paulette will pass through the Azores as a post-tropical storm

Hurricane Paulette will therefore be the first tropical cyclone to hit the Azores this year, although, unsurprisingly, already weakened and without hurricane intensity, it should essentially lead to increased sea and wind churning.

As explained by Carlos Ramalho, delegate of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) in the Azores, Carlos Ramalho, in statements to the Eastern Açoriano, after damaging the climate in Bermuda, Hurricane Paulette “should move towards the northeast, and may 15 (today) step up a bit.

However, as of the 16th, due to the variation of the winds in altitude and also to the lower temperature of the sea, the hurricane is expected to lose some of its intensity.

On Friday it should be located in the north of the archipelago and, from that point, it is expected to move south. In this movement to the south, there is the possibility that the 19th (Saturday) will affect the climate in the Western Group, but already losing tropical characteristics, that is, as a post-tropical storm ”.

Carlos Ramalho assures that it is still too early to accurately predict the weather in the Azores next Saturday, since it will depend a lot on the trajectory of the hurricane, referring only to the fact that, with current data, “it is not forecast, for now, what that will cause a very extreme situation regarding the weather forecast on Saturday in the Western Group ”.

Another unknown at this point is the trajectory of the storm when it is to the south of the archipelago, this being “a situation that we will follow in the coming days and we will see its evolution, both in intensity and trajectory,” says Carlos Ramalho.

The North Atlantic currently has five active cyclones, with (as of yesterday) two hurricanes, two tropical storms, and a tropical depression.
It is not possible to predict, at this time, if any of them, in addition to Paulette, will move north from the tropics, to the point of threatening the Azores. ♦
