Several hundred Nicolines gathered this Sunday morning in the Historical Center of Guimarães. The Pinheiro procession was this Sunday night and was canceled, but it was done in the morning, without a tree and in the presence of the PSP.
At 9 o’clock, members of the Committee of the Nicolinas Party met in Largo da Oliveira, with distance and mask, white shirt and black pants, beginning to drum Pinheiro’s touch.
In less than three hours, the amount of nicolins multiplied and reached hundreds. They came in box and drum from all corners of the Historic Center and, in Largo da Oliveira, Nicolino’s touch was deafening, chanted by many without a mask who ate and drank in the bars of that square.
The distance was also impossible to meet in the center of that square, such was the number of people. Along with the banner of the salty, five agents of the PSP of Guimarães watched everything and no intervention was made. Around 12 noon, the Nicolino Party Commission started a procession to the Nicolino monument, which is where the night procession that takes place every year usually ends.
There, the organizers climbed on a wall and, with their arms in the air, set the pace for the hundreds of players who set out to bring the tradition to the streets this year. There were no oxen nor was the tree buried, as is customary in tradition, but next to the monument the traditional patios that accompany the ox carts were also placed. “Bring Sasá and the cowboy, with or without covid, we make Pinheiro,” said one of them.
It should be remembered that it was the Nicolino Party Commission itself, which together with the Guimarães Chamber and two other associations of old Nicolinos, called for people not to go out into the streets this Sunday night. The appeal follows the guidelines of the health authorities that gave a negative opinion to the population concentrations that traditionally appear in the numbers of the Festas Nicolinas de Guimarães. Guimarães is one of the counties in the country most affected by covid-19. Between Tuesday and Thursday, in just three days, the number of deaths from covid-19 in Guimarães almost doubled, from 52 to 98. On Thursday, there were 2,465 active cases in that municipality.
