A cross in a square and the fulfillment of an “inalienable” civic right, which is also a duty. The Portuguese are called to go to the polls at the same time as they are forced to stay home to help control the spread of covid-19 cases, which reached new highs this Saturday.

The exception, at a time of total confinement in the country, is assumed by the government. António Costa announced that it is allowed to leave home, exceptionally, this Sunday, and until there is an interruption of the restrictions on freedom of movement between municipalities for voters who are forced to travel to the places where they are registered..

In the midst of the third wave of the pandemic, it may seem inconsistent to leave home to vote. We asked three experts if they are going to vote and if they consider that the exercise is safe. They answered yes and explained why.

Ricardo Mexia, president of the National Association of Public Health Physicians

“Not only will I vote, but I am a member of one of the polling stations. I believe that it is not a risk-free activity, but I hope that we are able to take care of it and minimize it for the good of all. Democracy must work. Over time, we should have considered postponing the elections. In the future, we will probably have to seek solutions that facilitate the exercise of this right with greater security ”.

Elisabete Ramos, president of the Portuguese Epidemiology Society

“I voted last Sunday and I believe that voting is safe. However, of course, each voter must also contribute to their safety and that of everyone else.”

Nelson Pereira, Emergency and Intensive Care Coordinator at the São João Hospital, in Porto

“Obviously I am going to vote. It is an inalienable right and duty. I am sure that the conditions on site will be guaranteed. I will keep my physical distance from everyone I come across and, above all, I come and go without stopping to talk and socialize ”.
