Herdade da Torre Bela avoids any responsibility for the forest that on December 17 resulted in the killing of 540 wild animals in that place, arguing that it had no direct or indirect participation in it and that the limits agreed for the hunting activity.

In a statement, the Treasury regrets “the wrong, illegitimate and abusive way” of how said assembly was carried out, of which it became aware only through the media. The publication also highlights that the property and its representatives have collaborated with the authorities from the outset, in order to determine responsibilities and, where appropriate, “be compensated for all losses” caused by this fact.

The property says that since 2001 it has developed a hunting activity that, in its opinion, contributes to the “maintenance of biodiversity and environmental sustainability”, highlighting that it has never encountered any type of problems or situations of this nature.

Herdade also takes the opportunity to clarify that this fact has nothing to do with any other activity carried out by her or its owners, as reported in some media. It is recalled that suspicions were raised that this homicide was related to a project to install a photovoltaic megacenter on the land in question.

On Tuesday, after this fact was known and provoked several reactions of repudiation and revolt in civil society and with the different political parties, the Minister of the Environment, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, admitted a revision of the Hunting Law, which does not require a communication to the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) of this type of activities.

That same day, the ICNF suspended the hunting license in the Herdade, to which it added a participation in the Public Ministry for the crime against the preservation of fauna. The environmental impact study for the installation of photovoltaic panels on the ground was also suspended by order of Matos Fernandes after consulting the Portuguese Environment Agency.
