Heavy rains put Madeira on orange alert until Tuesday

Between midnight and 9 in the morning of next Tuesday, October 20, an orange warning from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere for rain, which will be temporarily strong and sometimes in showers that can be accompanied by a storm.

The strong southwest wind also causes an orange warning for the same period, with the southern coastline showing gusts of up to 100 km / h and the mountainous regions up to 130 km / h. Until then, the weather forecasts for Madeira and Porto Santo place the archipelago on yellow alert.

In this context, the Regional Civil Protection Service leaves a series of recommendations to the population:

  • Be attentive to the warnings and recommendations of the competent authorities, keeping yourself informed of the evolution of the situation.
  • In case of flooding inside your home due to excessive rain, contact the local Fire Department and / or the Municipal Civil Protection Service of your municipality.
  • When driving in these conditions, slow down, driving with caution due to possible traffic congestion. Pay attention to layers of water that may form, do not drive or park in areas prone to flooding.
  • Pay attention to unblocking drainage systems and cleaning inert materials that can be carried away.
  • Be aware that roads may be blocked or restricted by traffic.
