The mayor of Guimarães, Domingos Bragança, expressed his “deep regret” for the death of the Portuguese thinker Eduardo Lourenço, who was part of the general council of the Cidade de Guimarães Foundation, highlighting the “precious literary and essay legacy” that he leaves.

“A man of affable treatment and disarming simplicity for someone of his intellectual stature and notoriety, Eduardo Lourenço leaves us a precious literary and essay legacy, fundamental for the understanding of Portugal and the Portuguese”, reads the note issued by the municipality.

The document recalls that the Portuguese philosopher was part of the general council of the Cidade de Guimarães Foundation, advisory and monitoring body of Guimarães European Capital of Culture, in 2012.

“Having willingly accepted the invitation to be part of that organization, Eduardo Lourenço went several times to Guimarães to participate in its meetings, invariably enriched by his vision, his thinking and his culture,” the text underlines.

Domingos Bragança expressed his “deep regret” and addressed to the grieving family “the deepest condolences”.

Councilor of State, professor, philosopher, writer, literary critic, essayist, civic auditor, several times awarded and distinguished, Eduardo Lourenço was one of the most outstanding thinkers of Portuguese culture.

Eduardo Lourenço Faria was born on May 23, 1923 in S. Pedro do Rio Seco, in the municipality of Almeida, district of Guarda, and died today, in Lisbon, at the age of 97.

Premio Camões y Prémio Pessoa, he also received the Charles Veillon European Essay Prize, the French Academy Award, and received the Grand Cross of the Order of Sant’Iago da Espada of the Order of Infante D. Henrique and the Order of the Freedom .

He was also named an Officer of the French Legion of Honor and a doctor consecrated ‘Honoris Causa’ by the universities of Rio de Janeiro, Coimbra, Nova de Lisboa and Bologna.
