INTERVIEW, PART I – Proud of the upward trajectory of Fábio Silva, one of his bets on FC Porto youth, Mário Silva hopes that the Uruguayan reinforcement of Benfica (ex Almería) will be discreet against Rio Ave

Fábio Silva (Wolverhampton) and Darwin Núñez (Benfica) are some of the pearls that Mário Silva helped to polish. The two forwards have already made many millions of euros this summer.

He coached Fábio Silva in the FC Porto youth team, which ended up being sold for 40 million euros to Wolverhampton. Are you proud of that?

-Logically, it was part of the work I did in training. I was very happy. As a training coach I spent a long time at FC Porto, but now that I am at a very demanding level, working for Rio Ave, I also feel that now I must disconnect a bit from previous clubs. However, I am very proud of everything that happened. [no FC Porto].

He also trained Darwin Núñez in Almería. He is a special striker who justifies Benfica’s huge investment [24 milhões de euros]?

-About the investment made, I do not speak. He is a young man with great potential. Like many other young players who passed me by, I hope they make it … In the games against Rio Ave, that’s the worst on the pitch.

Francisco Geraldes and André Pereira did not triumph at Sporting and FC Porto, respectively. How will you motivate them?

-Representing Rio Ave, who empowers players, is never a step back in your career. Here they will have the opportunity to assert themselves and demonstrate the quality they have.

After having been successful in training, do you now feel the need to prove your competence in professional football?

-My growth phase as a coach was in training, but in the previous season I already had an experience, albeit short, in front of a main team [Almería]. In 23 days, I had seven games in charge of a Spanish second league team, after starting as coordinator. I feel prepared.
