Claiming to be afraid to go home due to the pandemic, a man lived for three months, undiscovered, in a restricted area at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, United States of America.
Aditya Singh, 36, has lived at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport since October. He was arrested this weekend and is charged with the crime of trespassing in a restricted area.
The Chicago Tribune, which reports on the case, reveals that Aditya was approached last Saturday by two United Airlines employees, who asked him to verify his identification. The man is said to have displayed an identification plate, which was reported to have been lost on October 26 and belonged to an airport operations manager.
He was immediately arrested and it was then that he justified his presence: he claimed to be “afraid of going home because of covid-19” and said he had received help from other passengers, who have been giving him food in recent months. On Sunday he was present at court, where the contours of the story caused some surprise.
“If I understand correctly, are you telling me that an unauthorized person, who is not an employee, allegedly lived in a secure area of the O’Hare airport terminal between October 10 and January 16, and was not detected? ” Judge Susana Ortiz, who set a bail of one thousand dollars (the equivalent of 828 euros), with the exception that she will never go near the airport facilities again.
According to that local newspaper, Singh lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Orange and has no criminal record. It is unknown why he was in Chicago. He is now charged with the crime of trespassing in a restricted area and must appear again in court on January 27.
Although the judge deemed Singh “a danger to the community,” the BBC writes, citing a statement from the Chicago Department of Aviation, that the passenger in question “did not pose a security risk to the airport or the traveling public.”
