A Slovenian woman was found guilty of deliberately cutting her hand as part of an insurance scam. The defendant alleged that the accident occurred when cutting branches with a circular saw.
A court in the capital of Ljubljana revealed that Julija Adlesic, 22, had five insurance policies the year before the accident. The woman would receive more than one million euros.
Now Julija has been sentenced to two years in prison and her boyfriend for three years. The young woman and several members of her family were arrested in 2019 after she arrived at the hospital with her hand severed above the wrist.
The court concluded that Julija and her boyfriend had intentionally left the mutilated hand behind, instead of bringing it with them, to make sure the disability is permanent. However, the authorities recovered it in time to stitch it up.
Prosecutors said the woman’s boyfriend did too Internet searches for artificial hands in the days leading up to the accident and that this was proof that the mutilation was intentional.
Julija’s boyfriend’s father was also sentenced to a one-year suspended sentence.
Throughout the trial, the woman denied intentionally cutting her hand. Had the fraudulent claim been successful, the couple would have received more than half a million euros ready, the rest is paid in monthly installments.
