Guimarães students celebrated Pinheiro’s night on balconies and windows

It was a really atypical night in Guimarães. In the ancestral history of the Guimarães student festival, there is no memory of a November 29 night without a Pinheiro parade.

At a time of pandemic that determined the state of emergency, students were prevented from going outside to celebrate the start of the Nicoline Festivals.

Contrary to the usual, the streets were deserted, without new and old students with the contagious joy that annually makes the history of the longest night in Guimarães life. But the date has not been left blank. Unable to leave the street due to the curfew imposed by Covid-19, Guimarães students made their boxes and drums sound from the windows and balconies of their houses.

In Campo da Feira, Pinheiro’s place was empty but Nicolino’s spirit resounded in the City on a sad but also hopeful night. I hope that life returns to normal next year and that the Cortejo do Pinheiro returns to the streets of Guimarães.
