The Public Ministry (MP) accused a doctor from the Guimarães Hospital of negligent homicide, for discharging a patient who would die that same day, at his home, a victim of peritonitis.

According to a note published today on the website of the Regional Prosecutor General of Porto, the MP considers that the doctor “did not analyze in detail, nor did he interpret correctly” the abdominal X-ray that the victim had taken in the emergency service and which presented suggestive of pneumoperitoneum ”.

For the MP, the X-ray, along with the victim’s remaining symptoms, required a CT scan as a supplemental diagnostic test.

“If the accused had decided to carry out such an examination, the existence of peritonitis due to perforation of hollow viscera would surely be detected in the victim and, consequently, an immediate operative procedure would have been carried out,” he adds.

The case dates back to the morning of February 27, 2015, when the defendant was in the emergency service of the Guimarães Hospital and discharged a patient who had complaints of severe abdominal pain, with fifteen days of evolution.

The victim died, already at his home, around 11:00 p.m. that same day, of peritonitis, because his health condition worsened.

Peritonitis is inflammation of the peritoneum, the lining of the inner wall of the abdomen, and the abdominal organs.
