Hélder Pereira, orthopedist and natural researcher from Caldas das Taipas, Guimarães municipality, has just seen two articles published in one of the most important Sports Traumatology newspapers in the world.

Trata-se do Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery del Colégio Americano, e os artigos são: “Endoscopic transfer of FHL to increase Achilles disorders” and “Endoscopic transfer of the long flexor of the big toe for the treatment of acute tendon tears Achilles: report of a series of prospective cases with a minimum of 18 months of follow-up ”.

This technique is part of the development of a global approach to chronic and acute problems of the Achilles tendon, including the treatment of tears ”, explains the orthopedist, in a statement.

“The problems of the Achilles tendon (the strongest tendon in the body), due to their functional implications and the possibility of a prolonged recovery time, always have great implications both for athletes of all levels and for the general population due to the inherent absenteeism, “says press release.

“Sometimes they put their sports career at risk. Some internationally renowned athletes such as Fernando Gago (Boca Juniors, Real Madrid), André André (Portuguese international footballer) or the Olympic athlete Ricardo Ribas have already benefited from this approach to achieve sports resumption, ”the statement explains.

This work, which brought together some of the greatest international specialists, “reinforces Portugal’s position in international sports medicine.”

Achilles tendon problems, from tendinopathy to rupture, require an integrated and comprehensive approach. It is always a team effort and I highlight here the collaboration with Dr. Jorge Batista (orthopedist responsible for Boca Juniores) in this project and the ongoing research work of the Portuguese Dr. Pedro Dinis, which I believe will bring new options for the future ” says Hélder Pereira.

“Improving patient outcomes and accelerating recovery from sports and activity are the goal of the entire team,” concludes the doctor.
