The slowdown in the rate of new coronavirus infections in Portugal in recent weeks is reflected in the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the most affected municipalities.

The latest data from the General Health Directorate (DGS), referring to the period from December 4 to 17, show that only Lisbon, the most populous municipality in the country, registered more than two thousand new cases in that period. In the two weeks between December 25 and 8, the capital had the company from Vila Nova de Gaia and Guimarães.

The number of cases per municipality is calculated by Negócios based on the incidence published by the DGS and population data from the INE.

Guimarães, Gaia and Famalicão with the biggest drops


Guimarães was the municipality with the highest drop in new infections, with a reduction of 522 infections.

Vila Nova de Gaia followed, with 484 fewer, and Vila Nova de Famalicão, with 342 fewer.

Still with decreases in new infections above 300 are Loures and Braga, with decreases of 310 and 305, respectively.

In total, there were 19 municipalities in which the number of new infections was reduced by at least a hundred, including some of the municipalities most affected by the pandemic, the cases of Felgueiras, Lousada and Paços de Ferreira.

Bragança is the only municipality with an increase of more than 100 cases

Bragança is the only municipality where the number of new cases increased more than 100. The municipality of Trás-os-Montes experienced an increase of 354 new infections between December 4 and 17, 133 more than in the 14 days ended December 8. from December.

Among the municipalities with the highest slopes are five municipalities in the South Bank of the Tagus: Moita (91 more), Barreiro (79), Seixal (75), Montijo (64) and Palmela (63). Also in that area of ​​the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) the contagion accelerated in Sesimbra (55), Almada (37) and, slightly, Alcochete (4). Only Setúbal, with a decrease of three new cases, escaped this trend.

11 municipalities with more than 1,000 new cases in two weeks

Between December 4 and 17, 11 municipalities registered more than a thousand new infections, being Lisbon, the most populated municipality in the country, the only one that exceeded the threshold of two thousand cases. Still, the capital has seen the pace of spread of the pandemic slow compared to December 8.

In the 14 days to December 17, Lisbon reported 2,639 new cases, 61 fewer than the 2,700 registered between November 25 and December 8.

It is followed by Vila Nova de Gaia, with 1,842 cases, Sintra, the second most populated municipality, with 1,570, Vila Nova de Famalicão, with 1,533, Guimarães, with 1,519, and Braga, with 1,441. They are the municipalities that exceed the average of 100 new daily cases.

Still above the threshold of a thousand new cases in 14 days are Porto, Barcelos, Santa Maria da Feira, Gondomar and Matosinhos.

… and seven without any new cases

In seven counties, mainly in the Azores, not a single new contagion was reported.

In this enviable situation are the Azorean municipalities of Corvo, Lajes das Flores, Santa Cruz das Flores, Madalena and Vila do Porto, as well as Barrancos and Alcoutim.

There are also 10 counties with only one new case registered in those 14 days.
