The new Government of the Azores, led by the PSD, rejected the request for the resignation of the regional director of Health and head of the Regional Health Authority of the former executive of the PS, for not yet having a replacement.

In a letter to which the Lusa agency had access, dated November 24, Tiago Lopes requested the cessation of functions as regional director of Health and, inherently, of the Regional Health Authority, positions he held during the socialist government.

“I resign, ceasing my functions, from 00:00 hours on November 25, 2020, the position of regional director of Health, as well as the other positions that I hold by inheritance, so that I can take office and assume the mandate of deputy to the Regional Legislative Assembly, ”the document reads.

Tiago Lopes was elected deputy for the PS in the last regional elections as number two on the list of the island of Terceira.

The head of the Regional Health Authority justifies the “unavailability” to remain in office, taking into account what “publicly expressed today [terça-feira] appointed President of the Regional Government “, who said he wanted” to appoint immediately the regional director of Health and the regional coordinator of public health.

Tiago Lopes also proposes the appointment of Gustavo Tato Borges, appointed by the PSD government, as regional public health coordinator to “facilitate the transition and avoid obstacles of a formal nature.”

“From now on, I express my total availability to proceed with the transition of portfolios as soon as a new incumbent is appointed to the post of regional health director,” the letter adds.

In response, the regional secretary of Health, Clélio Meneses, informs that “the functions must be ensured in the day-to-day management until the appointment of the new owner”, who, “in no case, may exceed the maximum period of 90 days “:” At least exposed, I do not authorize the request for resignation, “read the response of November 24.

Tiago Lopes was the face of the Azores Health Authority during the pandemic, having entered the Azores house for months through the daily situation points of the covid-19.

In an interview with Agência Lusa, on October 5, the now President of the Government of the Azores, José Manuel Bolieiro, criticized the “political advantage” of the candidacy of Tiago Lopes.

“It is notoriously a political advantage. It could not be more obvious. Is this advantageous for the organic maturity of the region’s own governing bodies, the autonomy and democracy of the Azores? I don’t think so ”, considered the then Social Democratic president.

Weeks later, Bolieiro argued that Tiago Lopes should have “suspended” his duties, for an “ethical issue” and “impartiality.”

The Government of the Azores created a Special Monitoring Commission for the Fight against the Covid-19 Pandemic, an area that will operate in the office of the Secretary of Health and will be under the supervision of Dr. Gustavo Tato Borges, it was announced today.

The new Government of the Azores, formed by PSD, CDS and PPM, took office on Tuesday in the Legislative Assembly of the region.

With the entry into office, the new executive now has 10 days to deliver the Government program to the Legislative Assembly.
