The socialist leader and Minister of State and the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, said this Saturday that the lack of definition will begin with the schools, referring that the Government has already expressed this intention.

At the end of a forum promoted by the Socialist Youth (JS) entitled “Winning the future – Make your voice heard”, in which she participated in a personal capacity, Mariana Vieira da Silva responded to previous interventions on the closure of schools decided by the Government , as of January 22, to contain the spread of covid-19.

I wanted to say that I see myself in this problem. It is no coincidence that we try to avoid school closures as much as possible and that the Government has also said that it is precisely through schools that deflation will start again. ”Said the socialist, a member of the PS National Secretariat, through videoconference.

Then, the Minister of the Presidency pointed out that currently, “although schools are closed, around 18% of normal meals are served in a non-school closure period”, considering that “it is not so small.”

On the other hand, Mariana Vieira da Silva highlighted that “this school closure included measures that did not exist in the first [encerramento de escolas]That is, the possibility that students with additional therapies, with special educational needs, continue to attend school in person, and they are doing so. “

Now it is also possible to identify “students who need to be in person at school, they cannot be at distance school,” the minister stressed, noting: “We often devalue this work that is being done.”

“Our life has been very marked by the pandemic and I wanted to say that it will continue to be,” he declared.

On Thursday, at the press conference on the conclusions of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of State and the Presidency pointed out the “very high number” of people hospitalized in intensive care, arguing that “it is not compatible” with the creation of “The expectation of a shortage soon. “

“This is the time for us to once again appeal to all Portuguese and Portuguese to consider that we have a very high number of hospitalizations in hospitals and intensive care units and, while the path we are taking is encouraging, it is still very early for I think it’s near the end ”, he reinforced.

Asked about the possibility of reopening the schools, the minister replied: “It seems premature to talk about this next fortnight of lack of definition and in particular about schools.”

Given the worsening of the spread of covid-19 in Portugal, under the state of emergency, which allows the suspension of the exercise of some rights, freedoms and guarantees, the Government imposed a general duty of home collection and the suspension of a set of activities , from January 15.

However, the educational establishments were closed, with effect from January 22, first with a two-week school break and then with distance classes.

In Portugal, more than 15 thousand patients have died from covid-19 and so far more than 796 thousand cases of contagion from this disease caused by a new coronavirus have been reported, according to the General Directorate of Health (DGS).
