Government announces tougher measures and considers ending food and beverage trade

The Minister of Economy, Pedro Siza Vieira, announced on Friday the return to more restrictive measures due to the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Portugal.

Although the measures are still under discussion, they must go through “the closure of a set of activities”, as well as the ‘take away’ regime for restaurants.

Pedro Siza Vieira does not rule out the possibility that Portugal will return to a confinement similar to the one registered in April 2020.

“What we must consider plausible is the framework that was in force during April or the framework that was in force during the first half of May,” said the minister at a press conference after the Social Concert.

Siza Vieira recalled that at that time the industry and civil construction were still in operation, but activities such as “the small non-food business” and the restaurant that operated only to take out with home delivery ended.

“We have to preserve the response capacity of our health service,” said the minister. The measures will be announced during the next week.
It should be remembered that the Government approved this Thursday the extension until June 2021 of support for progressive recovery, which now guarantees 100% of the salary to workers in ‘dismissal’, and which is extended to partner-managers.

Siza Vieira considered that the current situation “is worrying”, also announcing the reinforcement of support for the self-employed.
