The Prime Minister admitted this morning that “most likely” the reassessment of the situation in the 121 counties will result in “different measures” for those with a higher incidence rate of very high covid cases such as Paços de Ferreira.

António Costa said that the municipality of Paços de Ferreira is the most serious case with an incidence rate of more than 4,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Portugal currently has 121 specific and more restrictive measures to combat the covid-19 pandemic in force due to the high incidence rate of registered cases, establishing the limit of 240 cases per 100,000 inhabitants as the threshold for inclusion in this list. of municipalities.

“There has been a very different evolution in the epidemiological situation in these 121 municipalities during the last 15 days and that is why it may be justified – I do not anticipate it, but it may be justified – that next Thursday we have already adopted different measures for the different municipalities ”, António Costa said today.

The Prime Minister spoke at the press conference at the end of the Council of Ministers meeting, which took place between Saturday afternoon and around midnight, at the Ajuda Palace, in Lisbon, with the aim of regulating the state of Emergency decreed by the President of the Republic between November 9 and 23.

In response to journalists, the prime minister said that regulating the state of emergency “does not replace the commitment” to define, as planned, every 15 days which municipalities enter and leave the risk list according to the epidemiological situation registered, saying that this will be done next Thursday.

“The most serious case is the case of Paços de Ferreira, it has an incidence rate of more than 4,000 thousand cases accumulated per 100,000 inhabitants in the last 14 days. It is an objectively very different situation from a municipality that has 240, and therefore, we will most likely have to adopt more differentiated measures for these municipalities that have much higher levels of incidence than others, ”said the president.

Since November 4, 121 municipalities are covered by the civic duty of home collection, schedule changes in commercial establishments and mandatory telework, except for “motivated opposition” by the worker, in response to the increase in new daily cases of covid-19.

The Government met on Saturday night in an extraordinary Council of Ministers to implement the measures that will frame the state of emergency promulgated on Friday by the President of the Republic.

The measures were decided on the day that Portugal once again reached a new maximum daily number of covid-19 cases, accounting for another 6,640 infections in 24 hours, and registered 56 deaths in the same period, according to the General Directorate of Health.

The state of emergency, which had never been applied in democracy in Portugal, was in force between March 19 and May 2, with two consecutive renewals, for a total of 45 days.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 1.2 million deaths in more than 49.3 million cases of infection worldwide.

In Portugal, 2,848 people died from 173,540 confirmed cases of infection, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate General of Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
