GNR conducts largest cannabis apprehension in Portugal – News

The military personnel seized some 23,000 plants, for a total of 14 tons.

The GNR of Santarém, through the Territorial Port of Almeirim, seized 23 thousand cannabis plants this Monday, in what could be the largest seizure ever made in Portugal and one of the most important in Europe.

The seizure came as part of a month-long investigation for extortion.

In a statement, the Santarém Territorial Command reported that the suspects were “linked to other illegal actions, such as the planting, cultivation and sale of cannabis plants.”

A 35-year-old man was arrested and another 50-year-old was charged on September 1.

In the course of police investigations, two search and seizure warrants were carried out at two companies that owned agricultural land and greenhouses.

In addition to the cannabis plants, 17 bags of cannabis weighing 91 kilograms, eight containers of growing material and fertilizers, two rolls of plastic mesh for drying plants, a mobile phone, a laptop, a mechanical atomizer to apply products with pharmaceutical use, an irrigation equipment and a fertilizer spreader.
