In a statement, the Santarém Territorial Command reported that the suspects were “linked to other illegal actions, such as the planting, cultivation and sale of cannabis plants.”

On September 1, a 35-year-old man was arrested and another 50-year-old was charged with drug trafficking, GNR said.

According to the authorities, the seizure of the 23 thousand cannabis plants weighing 14 tons, through the Terreirial Posto de Almeirim and the Criminal Investigation Center (NIC) of Santarém, corresponds to the “largest ever carried out in Portugal and one of the largest in Europe ”.

In the course of police investigations, two search and seizure warrants were carried out at two companies that owned agricultural land and greenhouses.

In addition to the cannabis plants, 17 bags of cannabis weighing 91 kilograms, eight containers of growing material and fertilizers, two rolls of plastic mesh for drying plants, a mobile phone, a laptop, a mechanical atomizer to apply products with pharmaceutical use, an irrigation equipment and a fertilizer spreader.

GNR said that the facts were referred to the Judicial Court of Santarém.

The police operation was carried out in the municipalities of Almeirim and Salvaterra de Magos, with military personnel from the Terreirial Posto de Almeirim, the Criminal Investigation Center (NIC) of Santarém, the Criminal Investigation and Information Section (SIIC), the Detachment of Intervention (DI), the Traffic Detachment (DT) and the Service Support Platoon. Also counting on the reinforcement of the GNR General Support Unit.
