After being fired from the construction company where he worked in the Basque Country, a man caused damage to the site with a backhoe, which he also used to break into a Mercedes factory, from where he had also been fired years before. There he destroyed about 50 vehicles.
On the last day of 2020, a 38-year-old man broke into the Mercedes factory in the Basque municipality of Vitoria-Gasteiz, where, using a backhoe loader that was previously stolen, he destroyed some 50 vans that were parked there. . The motive for the acts was revenge, says the regional press: the individual will have been resentful since, in 2017, he was fired by the German car manufacturer.
According to the newspapers “El Correo” and “Periodismo del Motor”, the man had just been fired from another company, related to the construction sector, in Legutiano. It was there that he got the backhoe, with which he caused several damages both in the construction company and in the Mercedes factory, as well as in the 20 km of route he traveled to get from one point to another.
Arriving at the factory, the man broke down the wall and the parking fence and, from there, swept everything in front of him. A video that captured the moment shows that several crashed vehicles were severely dented and some ended up being thrown at others. The attack only ended when a member of the building’s security team fired a warning shot and alerted authorities.
The man was detained by the police before meeting the goal of reaching the assembly line, which would have forced Mercedes to suspend production until the line was operational again. He faces charges of destruction of public and private property.
Mercedes did not comment on the incident, which caused no casualties.
