In 1974, after the death of the then French president, Georges Pompidou, two years into his term, Giscard d’Estaing surprisingly won the presidential elections, defeating the ‘gaulist’ Jacques Chaban-Delmas and the future president, François. Mitterand, who succeeded him in 1981.
During the campaign, Giscard d’Estaing obtained the support of important personalities of French society such as Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon or Charles Aznavour.
On May 27, 1974, at the age of 48, Giscard d’Estaing became the youngest French president in history, a ‘title’ he lost to the current president, Emmanuel Macron. He served a mandate, until May 21, 1981, with Jacques Chirac as Prime Minister, and was succeeded by François Mitterrand.
