Private companies do not intend to follow the prime minister’s advice and suspend production on the eve of the December 1-8 holidays. The business associations heard by Correio da Manhã (article for subscribers) considered it impractical to stop, at a time when various sectors are experiencing difficulties due to the new coronavirus pandemic.

The government announced that it was going to give the public service a tolerance period for November 30 and December 7, just before the injured, and that it would suspend school activities on those days. António Costa also called on private entities to lay off workers in these two days.

“It’s like asking someone to drown so they can put their head under water for a few more minutes,” said Mário Jorge Machado, from the Portuguese Textile Association. It is “unthinkable”, considered Pedro Queiroz, general director of the Federation of Agrifood Industries of Portugal (FIPA). “The measure is not proportional to what we want to achieve.”

César Araújo, from the National Association of Clothing and Apparel Industries (ANIVEC), justified the impossibility of stopping work with “other forced stops” this year, “Before, there were even those who gave these days,” he said, but the majority will choose . for not doing it in early December. Vítor Poças, Association of Wood and Furniture Industries of Portugal (AIMMP), reminded Correio da Manhã that it is necessary to make up for lost time, because it is rare for companies to have “production lines running at maximum”.

“The trend is to be open in the morning. The situation is already so complicated that it will be difficult for these revenues to cede ”, admitted in the Correio da Manhã João Vieira Lopes, from the Confederation of Commerce and Services of Portugal (CCP).

According to the Correio da Manhã, with the closure of the schools, many workers opted to request a leave of absence for vespers, replacing these days with holidays, to alternate days with their spouse. Another solution has been the holidays. And no one seems to know for sure whether the absences given will be excused.

“There are anguished families, with no alternative, who risk leaving their children with their grandparents or alone at home,” said Jorge Ascenção, of the National Confederation of Parents Associations (Confap), in statements to Jornal de Notícias, highlighting: “When a measure is announced, you have to think about everyone, even if they are a minority.”

Contacted by Jornal de Notícias, Rui Martins, president of the National Confederation of Parents and Independent Guardians (CNIPE), said he believed that the regime created in March after the closure of schools was still in force, but he was not sure. The same newspaper tried to confirm this information with the Ministry of Labor, but was unable to obtain a response in time for press time.
