Norwegian international footballer Omar Elabdellaoui of Galatasaray suffered serious injuries to his face and both eyes in an accident involving pyrotechnic devices to celebrate the New Year, the Turkish club reported on Friday.
According to Dr. Vedat Kaya, Elabdellaoui, a former Olympiacos and Manchester City player, arrived at the hospital around midnight today, having been treated “with a plastic surgeon and a team of ophthalmologists.”
One eye is more affected than the other, said the clinician, and even if the footballer feels better, it is still too early to define a return to football or the possibility of permanent consequences.
Already Galatasaray president Mustafa Cengiz visited the player, as well as the coach and the captain, and stressed that, although Elabdellaoui is “in a good mood”, it is necessary to “keep faith” and wait “a week or two” to understand the clinical picture of the defender and extreme of 29 years.
