The heavy rains that have fallen since the last dawn in Praia have caused the death of a baby, several floods, landslides and destruction of vehicles and buildings, according to Civil Protection.

At the end of the morning, several streets remained impassable, especially in the lower areas of the city, with hundreds of people concentrated outside, with structures and communication routes at risk.

According to the president of the National Civil Protection and Fire Service, Renaldo Rodrigues, in one of the floods a six-month-old baby died, who was at home with his mother and brother.

The floods affect the neighborhoods of Paiol, Lém Cachorro, Calabaceira and Pensamento, in Praia, but also in other parts of the island of Santiago.

“I would not say that the situation is chaotic, but it does inspire care. We have dozens of people in risk areas, in various locations, who have to be resettled immediately, ”Renaldo Rodrigues told Lusa.

In a round by Lusa in the morning, popular reports coincided with a storm never seen in many years in the Cape Verdean capital.

“I had never seen him in Praia, in the interior of Santiago,” explained José Rodrigues, 40.

“This highlights the lack of planning in Praia,” he criticized.

Along the same lines, José do Canto, 58, confessed an unprecedented scenario when observing the destruction in Praia: “Many houses overturned, many people with problems getting water from their houses. I have never seen a storm like this.”

Meanwhile, some embassies have appealed to the respective citizens who are in Praia to protect themselves in the next few hours, avoiding unnecessary travel.

The Cape Verde archipelago has been under the influence of a tropical wave since last morning, which could turn into a tropical depression, according to the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG).

Forecasts indicate that the tropical wave will arrive in the country until Monday, being associated with a large area of convection producing downpours and electrical storms.

The Cape Verdean institute said the system is located along the coast of Guinea Bissau, traveling at a speed of 30 km / h and has a 70% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

“During its passage, it will condition the climate in the islands,” said the INMG, which also predicts rains of variable intensity and the possibility of storms, intensification of the wind and significant deterioration of the state of the sea.

“The National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics, INMG will carry out permanent monitoring of the system, its surveillance and monitoring, updating the information on the weather, periodically and continuously,” the Cape Verdean entity guaranteed.

Last Monday and Tuesday, a tropical depression approached Cape Verde and turned into a tropical storm, with wind and heavy rains, especially on the islands to the north of the archipelago.

On Wednesday, Cape Verde’s Agriculture Minister Gilberto Silva said the rains that fell earlier in the week across the archipelago already guarantee pasture, but said more is still needed for corn and bean production and recharge of underground water.

After three consecutive years of drought, with irregular and insufficient rains, since mid-July rains have returned with some frequency in some islands of Cape Verde.
